At the 85th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), a panel event on “Externalisation of Migration Management: Legal issues, Current Challenges and Responsibilities of African states” was organized by PIERR member Commissioner Selma Sassi-Safer, under her mandate as Special Rapporteur on Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Internally Displaced Persons and Migrants in Africa of the ACHPR. The Chair of the PIERR, Ms. Siobhán Mullally (UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children), also presented on this panel.
The PIERR Chair, Ms. Mullaly, discussed the analysis of the legal issues of migration externalisation agreements concluded with African states. Commissioner Sassi-Safer, highlighted that the externalisation of migration management must be exercised in strict compliance with regional and international obligations. Other panelists included UNHCR, IOM and HRW.
